Royal Palace Madridfacts

The Royal Palace of Madrid or Palacio Real as it is known in Spanish is the official residence of Juan Carlos, the King of Spain. The Palace is used by the king for celebrations and ceremonies but he and the royal family don’t live there, the Place is owned by the Spanish state.

The palace is just 800 km (874 yds.), around 10 minutes’ walk from the Plaza Mayor and therefore very central and easily accessible, it is located right next to the Almudena Cathedral. The palace is lavishly decorated thought and is full with exquisite furnishings, rock crystal chandeliers,embroidered velvet hangings as well as frescos and art which include paintings by Velazquez and Goya as well as the Italian Caravaggio. The palace also houses Stradivarius violins.

The Throne Room is also a must see, it remains intact from the reign of Carlos III. The vault was frescoed by Tiepolo

The Royal Armory featuring a large selection of weapons and armor of the medieval period and the armory of Carlos V and Felipe II is also on show.
